To encourage people to look after their heart, Valley PHO offered free heart checks at Tumeke Taita Summer Festival on March 17th.

62 people had their heart checked on the day.

Heart disease is silent, people are usually unaware that they are at risk of a having a heart attack or stroke. Heart health checks are recommended for all men over 45 and women over 55. Māori, Pacific and Indian men and women should begin heart checks 10 years earlier (35 and 45).

For those unable to make this Saturday 17 March, you may be eligible for a free or low cost heart check with your own doctor or practice nurse. Phone your medical centre to enquire.

Even though Mental Health Awareness Week is over for 2011, it is still important to carry on thinking about our wellbeing and how we can each 'train' to have stronger, more positive mental health.

This year's rugby inspired theme for Mental health Awareness 'Get in the Game' reminds everyone that just like our physical health, our mental health requires effort and application.

Top coaches agree, training makes you play a better game, and it's no different when it comes to mental health. Check out  Winning-ways
